A.E. Kieren

A.E. Kieren is a freelance illustrator and performer whose work brings events, performances, and public moments to life through on-location illustration and “sketch journalism.” His style blends pen and ink with watercolors and gouache, creating images that capture both the mood and essence of a scene while embracing spontaneity, abstraction, and the fleeting energy of the moment. Kieren’s illustrations are at once observational and interpretive, balancing precise detail with playful, expressive gestures that draw the viewer into the narrative.

He has been commissioned by a wide range of clients, including Google, Moleskine, Disney/ABC, AMC + Target, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, Salvatore Ferragamo, Refinery Hotel, Sleep No More / McKittrick Hotel, The Dramatist, and Daily Front Row. His work spans editorial illustration, live event documentation, theatre posters, book covers, wine labels, and other visual storytelling projects.

Kieren earned his BFA in Illustration from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, and an MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He is driven by a curiosity for observing the world, a love of narrative, and a passion for translating fleeting moments into engaging, imaginative illustrations. With each project, he aims to blend technical skill with an expressive, personal vision, offering viewers both a record of an event and an emotional experience.
